SOAPware just announced it’s next update, due in the next week or two, will include the new add-on feature of Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS), which is good news given national estimates indicate about 12-percent of all prescriptions written are for controlled substances.
The additional feature is timed perfectly as the push to go electronic with prescription writing is picking up steam. Recently, the State of New York tried to force the entirety of its medical community to switch to e-prescribing only with a program called I-Stop. The deadline to make the switch was set for March 2015, but at the last minute was moved to March 2016. The use of e-prescribing will likely continue to be an initiative at both state and federal levels in coming years. The new SOAPware feature will meet all of New York’s I-STOP regulations.
There is a two-step authentication process in place when a prescription for a controlled substance is written. Providers will also be provided with a randomly generated codes which much be entered every time a provider ePrescribes a controlled substance. The codes will either be generated by a special device dedicated to just that purpose, or generated by smartphone or tablet. The EPCS system will also include a refill request process similar to that of the existing refill requests workflow.
We here at CloudPoint are currently in training to learn how to use this system, and will be well versed in the specifics of it before it is officially launched. So as always, we will be here to answer any questions and offer any support you might require should you choose to upgrade to EPCS.
